Dinner With Bill has been the signature fundraising event for The Arc Jacksonville for 20 years. The dinner is named in honor of Bill Sackter, a man who spent 44 years in a state institution for the mentally retarded before he was befriended by a young college student named Barry Morrow. Morrow’s account of this friendship resulted in the Emmy Award-winning television movie, Bill, which starred Mickey Rooney and Dennis Quaid. Morrow’s creative interest in adults with disabilities continued and in 1988 won him an Academy Award for best original screenplay for Rain Man, the story of an autistic adult and his brother starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise.
Bill Sackter’s philosophy was “What every person needs to succeed is a good home, a good job and a good buddy.” The Arc Jacksonville embraces that philosophy, and Dinner With Bill is a time of celebrating achievement with our program participants. The evening’s highlight is a presentation of the Corporate Disabilities Employment Awards given to companies that excel in employing people with disabilities. The Mayor’s Disability Council sponsors the awards that recognize two companies who are small employers and two who are large employers.
