About The Arc Jacksonville
Our History
The Arc Jacksonville began more than forty years ago by parents seeking opportunities for their children with mental retardation. Because public schools were not then available to these children, we originally provided educational opportunities. But as public education became available to all people, The Arc Jacksonville changed and expanded its services, which are described on this Web site.
Today, with an annual operating budget of $7 million, we serve over 400 individuals daily and provide employment for approximately 120 staff members. Services are rendered from three main locations as well as five group homes. In addition to the direct services provided through our programs, The Arc Jacksonville serves as a source of information and support for the entire North East Florida area through its advocacy program, called A.S.K. (Advocacy, Support and Knowledge).
The primary location of the agency is in downtown Jacksonville, with other locations on the Westside and in the Arlington area. The group homes are also located on the Westside, Arlington and in St. Nicolas.
The agency’s primary funding comes from the State of Florida’s Agency For Persons With Disabilities, through the Medicaid Waiver program. Additional funding is received from Vocational Rehabilitation, the City of Jacksonville’s Public Services Grant Program, the City of Jacksonville’s Community Development Block Grant Program and United Way. Funds are also raised through grant writing as well as private contributions. The largest private source of funds is the agency’s annual fundraiser, Dinner with Bill.
