The Hodges Project
During the past two years, The Arc Jacksonville has been in the process of trying to secure vacant property on Hodges Boulevard, currently owned by the State of Florida. The Arc Jacksonville has set its sights on developing the property into a planned residential community for individuals with developmental disabilities.
The property was donated to the State in 1969 by a group of Jacksonville individuals, with a deed restricted requirement that the property “be used by the State of Florida for the benefit of the mentally retarded, or other similar public purpose.”
The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) recently held a public hearing in Jacksonville for the purpose of inviting community comments and proposals for the potential use of the property. The undeveloped portion of the tract of land is approximately 38 acres. APD will accept proposals and then evaluate each to determine if all deed restrictions can be met. Potentially, APD could recommend to the Florida Cabinet that the entire vacant property be conveyed to one or multiple entities. A decision from the Florida should be made sometime in the spring of 2010.
Our vision includes a planned residential community, which celebrates the diversity of Jacksonville and warmly welcomes the participation of the broader community. Input from families and potential residents will shape the scope of services and the overall development of this massive project.
Residential options will include affordable condominiums, apartments, patio homes and small group homes. In addition, a community center complete with clubhouse, pool, fitness center, snack bar, game room will be available for resident use, as well as a host of other recreational opportunities. It is anticipated that other collaborations will be developed with other organizations, which will allow for full participation in inclusive activities and experiences with the broader community.
In the end, what each individual with a developmental disability wants is no different from what we all want – a safe, secure living environment over which they have control, meaningful and productive things to do, intimacy in their relationships with others, and the opportunity for rejuvenation.
